COURSE DESCRIPTION


Prerequisites: Art History 206 or a similar course recommended. Ideally also an upper division course in the art of the Italian Renaissance, or something similar. Those without this background who enroll in this class are assumed to be willing to make up the missing experience through extra reading.

Texts: There is one main text for this course. We will also use various articles, which will be on reserve for you in the Art Library.

  1. Howard Hibbard. Michelangelo. Required. Excellent biography of the man and his art. Basic to this course.
  2. Johannes Wilde. Michelangelo: Six Lectures. Oxford U. Press, 1979. This is out-of-print, and so I can't make you buy it, but I will put a copy on reserve and assign readings from it. Despite is relatively older date, this is an excellent discussion of several (actually, six) aspects of Michelangelo's life and art.

Also: there will be a few readings on hold in the Art Library for you to read. Required readings will be indicated in class and included in the reserves in the Art Library.

Course Requirements: The course will be part lecture by the professor and discussion with the students. Therefore, attendance is vital. Students are allowed only one unexcused absence. More will bring down your final grade by five points for each day. Students are expected to conduct themselves as adults and to be courteous and supportive to the others in the class.



N. B.: Attendance The course will be part discussion on the readings and part writing. Students will write three shorter papers (ie, 3-5 pages) and one larger paper (ie, 7-10 pages). Grading will be set up as follows:

  • Participation: 20%. This means thoughtful contributions to the various discussions.
  • Papers 1-3: 10% each.
  • Paper 4: 50%.
