On the Paper

As undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled in this class, there will be two different types of papers required. Graduates please see here for your papers.



Paper Requirements

  1. The Undergaduate Paper is to be 4 to 6 pages long. It can be longer (but no more than 8-10 pages) but it cannot be shorter.
  2. Format: Use 8 x 11.5 paper, one inch margins all around. Use twelve point type. Use footnotes or endnotes. No in-text notes.
  3. Besides notes, you will need to have a bibliography and plates (illustrations). These are not included in the paper length, which means that the final length of your paper could be significantly more than 4 to 6 pages.
  4. Number of items in the bibliography: this is going to depend on your subject, and how ambitious you become. You should probably have at least five sources, among books and articles. Please note that you should not use art history survey texts (ie, Adams and Harbison) among these sources.
  5. You will be writing two short papers, and you may wish to pick them to go along with our process in the course. You might also wish to pick two works from different periods in an artist's life: Michelangelo, Leonardo, Botticelli, the development of prints are all good topics for this.
  6. I reserve the right to limit the number of people working on the same topic, so if you are interested in Michelangelo's David or Leonardo's Mona Lisa (both good topics, by the way), contact me ASAP.
  7. You must visit the Professor at least twice re: your paper and your progress before you hand it in. If you cannot visit during office hours, you will need to be able to come at some other time, to be arranged in consideration of both your and my schedule.
  8. Students must complete both papers to get credit for this assignment. That is, you cannot write one paper and hope for half credit.
  9. The first paper is due: Wednesday, March 3. The second paper is due: Wednesday, April 21.

Paper Suggestions (which are close to being Requirements)

  1. This is a short paper. Pick a short subject.
  2. Best is to pick one work of art, or two closely related ones. Suggestions for Topics that should Work:
    • Giotto in the Arena, Bardi, OR Peruzzi Chapel.
    • Donatello's realism (ie, perspective, emotionalism, use of space...)
    • Two contrasting sculptures from Orsanmichele (ie, by different sculptors with different interests).
    • Botticelli--the Mythological paintings, Portraits, or Religious Paintings. Be sure to see me about shaping this topic before you get mired in the thousands of Botticelli books and articles.
    • Leonardo and the Mona Lisa, or look at 2 of his other female portraits.
    • Recent discussions on female portraiture.
    • Recent discussions on male portraiture.
    • The Putto (this is the baby angel you see in many paintings and sculptures)
    • Donatello's David (an aspect of)
    • Michelangelo's David (an aspect of)
    • Jan van Eyck and portraiture
    • Jan (and Hugo?) van Eyck: the Ghent Altarpiece
    • Hugo Van Der Goes' Portinari Altarpiece
    • An aspect of prints in the North (esp. Durer)
    • Bramante's Tempietto.
    • Raphael's Madonnas: 2 or 3 compare and contrast.
    • One painting by Titian.
    • Finally: there are a very few useful objects in the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, and also at the UK Museum in Lexington. The Ulmann Galleries at Berea College has several Italian Renaissance paintings donated to them by the Kress Foundation. Work on any one of these could be an interesting alternative to working from photographs. Please see me before taking on this alternative.

  4. I will need a paragraph describing your choice for your first paper by Wednesday, January 28. I am deliberately not giving you a lot of time to make this selection; look through our text and pick something that sounds good.
