SUMMER PROGRAMS EMPHASIZING LANGUAGE STUDY

Dreading those language exams? Tired of pointing and grunting in the archives? Soothe the conjugating experience by undertaking the learning chore in a sympathetic clime. These programs, which may offer courses in addition to language study, are listed alphabetically by individual language. I haven't been on any of these programs, so check them out yourself. Multiple Language Programs

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY CRITICAL LANGUAGES INSTITUTE

"Arizona State University is now accepting applications for the Summer 2011 session of its Critical Languages Institute (CLI). CLI courses are tuition free. Full and partial fellowships are available for most languages. Application deadline: March 1, 2011." See the Web site for details.

MIDDLEBURY LANGUAGE SCHOOLS AND KRESS FOUNDATION SUMMER STUDY FELLOWSHIPS

Summer 2011. "...to attend the Middlebury summer Language Schools, in French, German, Italian, or Spanish. These fellowships are intended for graduate students in art history with a proposed focus on European Art History. Preference will be given to graduate students who have recently been accepted or are currently enrolled in the requisite program at a Ph.D.-granting institution in the United States. Fellowships cover the comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools." See the Web site for more information.

SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR LANGUAGES OF THE MUSLIM WORLD

13 June-6 August 2011. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE BUREAU OF EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS: CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTENSIVE SUMMER INSTITUTES

June 27-August 12, 2011. "The program offers intensive Modern Standard Arabic instruction at seven different levels: Introductory, High Introductory, Low Intermediate, Intermediate, High Intermediate, Advanced and Superior. The typical daily workload includes five hours of MSA and one hour of Lebanese dialect, followed by lectures, field trips, clubs and movies which are integrated into the program..." Study French at all levels, with different schedules and different prices. They offer diplomas and certificates which are internationally recognized. There are branches of the A.F. all over the world-- including such Paris look-alikes as Denver, Houston, and Miami.

STUDY PROGRAM IN LYON--UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI KANSAS CITY

June 10 - July 20, 2012. "UMKC's six-week, 9-unit program offers the opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the French language and culture, within the context of the lovely city of Lyon. This program differs from many other summer programs in that students live for the entire six weeks with host families, specially chosen for their interest in sharing French life and culture with foreign students. Italy with the British. Could one be more authentically Jamesian?

Lots of classes. Actually, all I really know about this school is that it is located in the architecturally important 15th century Renaissance palace, which everybody learns about in the art history survey (unless it is taught by a particularly modern modernist). See above right.

PADUA BOSTON UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAM

15 June - 27 July, 2012. "The Padova Language and Liberal Arts Program offers six weeks of intensive language and cultural study in a historic university town, located in the hill country 20 miles west of Venice. Students may choose one of four tracks of study..., which include Italian language courses from the elementary to the advanced levels as well as liberal arts courses taught in English or Italian." PERUGIA UNIVERSITA PER STRANIERI

This is where it seems almost everyone who wants to study Italian in Italy goes: the entire city is full of students from around the world plus it is (relatively) inexpensive. It is also now a fully accredited university that awards advanced degrees. See a short evaluation of it here.

"For summer 2011, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer fellowships for up to 15 advanced students for participation in the summer program in intensive advanced Turkish language at Bogazici University in Istanbul.
