Here will be list the various works of art and scenes from Venice, further elucidated with scattered pearls of wisdom. This list will be updated after the lectures.

Week 1

These lectures were intended to give you a sense of the history and geography of Venice. To help with this, you had a short reading from James Morris' Venice. Some images: View of the Palazzo Ducale, the belltower, the Libreria (Library) and the Zecca (Mint) from the Grand Canal.

Week 2

This week we discussed the origins of Venetian painting, considering its roots in Byzantine and International Gothic styles (the first Rona Goffen article will help you on this). We then reviewed the rise of the Bellini family of painters.

Monument to Doge Pietro Mocenigo by Pietro Lombardo Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, 1476-1481.
On Ss Giovanni e Paolo by an almost unbearably refined "Viscountess." The church is the location of the burial of 25 Doges, and a collection of sculpture and painting over several centuries.

SS Giovanni Paolo The Scuola di San Marco is the white building on the left; you can see just a sliver of the Scuola di S. Orsola at the right of the church. Most of the piazza space you see around the church complex was formerly a cemetary.
Here is the now-former Scuola di S. Orsola This is where several members of the Bellini family are buried and this is the original location of Carpaccio's Stories of St. Ursula.

Week 4

Devoted to anonymous and early architecture of Venice (Tuesday) and the architecture of Mauro Codussi (Thursday), with some consideration of the Lombardo family.

Earlier 15th-century architecture in Venice

Ca D'Oro 1421-1438. Done for the Contarini family; originally gilded. Designed by Giovanni Bon and his son Bartolomeo. It is now a museum/gallery.
Atmosphere.

Ca D'Oro: the courtyard Over its history the palace was much changed, esp. the interior; it was restored in the late 19th century. The wellhead shown here is original.

Ca Dario Built for Giovanni Dario, a 15th-century diplomat.

This was built to provide office space for the Procurators, basically high-level civil servants.

Mauro Codussi

Mauro Codussi was born ca. 1440 near the city of Bergamo (in Venetian territory) and died in 1504. He introduced ancient Roman (classical) architectural vocabulary into Venice and was also inspired by the work and theories of Leone Battista Alberti. On Alberti, see his completed facade of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, of 1470. See also his design for the so-called Malatesta Templein Rimini. Here is what was actually built. Codussi's buildings are listed more or less in chronological order.

San Zaccaria

Mauro Codussi. San Zaccaria. Begun in 1458 by Antonio Gambello, who died in 1481, having completed only the first level. Codussi finished it in 1483.

Mauro Codussi. Facade of the Scuola di San Marco. This is next to the church of Ss Giovanni e Paolo and across from Verrocchio's bronze statue to condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni. Begun by Pietro Lombardo, finished by Codussi. 1485/1495.

Codussi Palaces

Mauro Codussi with others. Palazzo Corner-Spinelli 1490 and later (known to have been finished by 1521). The interior was redone a few years later by Michele Sanmicheli, Giorgio Vasari and Jacopo Sansovino.
