System Administrator Posistion
Overview:
Oregon Public Networking is based in
Eugene, OR, and operates a community-based civic network in Eugene,
Springfield, and Oakridge, soon expanding to Florence and other sites in
southern Oregon. OPN is a 501(c)(3) private non-profit organization run
by an active, hands-on Board of Directors, with a staff that includes, in
addition to system administrators, a two-person paid Community Development
department, a two-person paid Administrative Office staff, and usually 100
active volunteers.
OPN's systems include several Sun Sparcstations
running SunOS 4 and Sun NFS, an Internet router, Livingston Portmaster
terminal servers, an internal ethernet, and approximately 200 phone lines.
We provide WWW, mail, news, gopher, shell, and Dialup-IP service for 8,000
members.
We are seeking a Managing System Administrator with
demonstrated interests and abilities in civic networking. We hope to find
a person who will insure that our systems are functional, reliable, and
secure, and who can effectively communicate and negotiate with OPN's
non-technical staff and directors concerning the technical infrastructure
for implementing OPN's organizational mission. Because of the abundance
of networking expertise in the OPN community, a candidate who posesses
superior communications skills and is able to supervise staff and
volunteers while maintaining system integrity will be considered even if
lacking in a particul area of technical ability.
Job Description
Managing System Administrator
Experience:
2 years of network administration experience with
progressing responsibility in the management and
planning for the network.
Education:
BS in computer science or a related field
preferred, equivalent experience can be
substituted.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work independently under general
direction of the OPN Board; Ability to formulate
and carry out plans that implement the needs of
the community network; Considerable ingenuity in
solving problems within strict resource limits;
ability to coordinate work with others, involving
and encouraging volunteers; Detailed knowledge and
experience with UNIX, TCP/IP, Routing, internet
standards and practices; Extensive knowledge and
experience acquiring, troubleshooting, repairing,
installing, operating, and maintaining computer
hardware, software and communications equipment;
Extensive knowledge and experience in telephony
especially for data communications, including
dial-up and dedicated circuits, modems, various
protocols, low and high speed communications;
Ability to work with the phone company; Ability to
build, configure, install, troubleshoot, modify,
and debug a variety of UNIX systems and
communications software; Ability to write programs
of moderate complexity in C and PERL; Knowledge of
UNIX security and ability to monitor and improve
system security; Ability to set up and carry out
regular backup and recovery procedures and other
measures necessary to insure the integrity of the
system; Ability to integrate the intent of the
Board and the needs of the system users into
decisions on software configuration and
development; Ability to work in a sometimes
chaotic environment and still maintain task
organization, strategic direction, and maximize
reliability and availability of the network system
Salary: Commensurate with experience to $45,000
