Left Vancouver on Friday night at around Midnight. Got to Eugene about 6:00 am. After breakfast, drove out to fair site. Once inside, ran into very dear friend with 30 minutes! This was my first encounter with funcky counterculture. Changed my life! Beat the sweep in the roof of a booth, but couldn't stay too late for fear of being towed. Would really like to camp all weekend this year.

I lived in Eugene for seven years and the Country fair always
seemed to be the epitomee of what Eugene was all about.
A gathering of happy people helping and entertaining each other
in a way that seems only to happen there. I miss Eugene
terribly and when I saw this Country fair page I almost
started to cry. Thanks for a great fair in 96
I hope I can make it back for the 97 fair.

I loved the fair. As for the people that think the fair isn't any good anymore because the Grateful Dead are no longer around, GET A LIFE.

Saturday '96 dusk. WC fields stage. The sweep is imminent. My
brother and I looking to find a way. On the stage were a
group of dancers warming up. !Look at the ground and be
thankfull!...moving toward the stage and waiting for the call
to show the pass. The sound of dancer's feet and breathing.
Up the staircase. Onto the stage. Down the back stairs. Are we
in? ...Hang a left around a small building. Sit down in the
empty beach chairs and become invisible...The tall trees cool
the white sky, long wait to purple black...A woman appears...
How important is it that I report two people without passes?
Only as important as it has to be! Ah Yes, she said...Klezmah
sounds and its the Karamozovs bungling down the trail of the
dark night. Such a silly, joyfull sound. Like being in a zoo
and discovering the gate where you were fed for ten years was
open...Open into the cooling night...the unknown...coincidence
and uncertainty, disappointment and delight, squished together
in a popcorn kernel of laughter as the trail to the main stage
begins to anchor in safety.

I can't wait to get there and really look forward to the fair. Eydie, my wife, has been to the fair and has nothing but great things to say about it.

It was a great time as always, but a little too crowded for my liking, even on Sunday.
Sometimes I think that publicity has gone a little far, for with all the fairgoers you ahve now, you'll be able to survive for a century.
Maybe some guest speakers, like Ken Kesey or a big, impotant name like that.

Overjoyed to find your page!!!I am a hard-core Eugenian, but stuck now in Portland 'cus this is where the jobs are...pppfffftttt! I have been to the fair many times, but have missed it the last 3 years, it came and went before I realized it, WAAAAA. I just marked my calander for next summer's fair, so hope I don't miss it this time around!
Now, when I am homesick for the Eugene atmosphere, I will come here, to this touch of Eugene, the REAL Eugene, (Not Brian Obie's vision of Eugene).
Hey, are you gonna have a contest this year for the poster design? I am an artist and would like to give it a shot! Can someone e-mail me the info?

At sunrise I was forced awake by a cool farm cat named Murph.
I was not unhappy or disappointed by this. I watched the water
trucks heading down the highway toward the fair, and saw one
of the dopest fruity sunrises I've ever seen. I hung out with
Murph for a while and around 8:00 when my friends and fellow campers
were ready for another day at the fair, we rolled in VW buses
along the road to harmony in the trees. There were good vibes
all around, and they weren't just from the previous night's
"fungal exploration". The valley is a magical place in July.

I love the fair and it's the most magical event in my year.
This year I planned my vacation around the fair, and included
a week-long trip down the Oregon Coast.
I've only been to the Fair in '95 and '96, but this year it seemed much
more crowded than last year. Is there any chance of adding an extra day?
If the Fair were Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, I'd attend on Thursday and
Friday. This year I had advance tickets for all three days, but
didn't go in on Sunday because the crowds on Saturday wore me out.
Thanks for all your hard work!

We planned to be at the fair 2 days, but only got in on
Friday. Although we planned our trip from California to
the fair 10 months in advance, we were not aware that
advanced tickets were available, and indeed would be
required to get into the fair on Saturday and Sunday.
We were heartbrokened to find out that the fair was
sold out when we arrived at 11:30 AM on Saturday.
Also, it really would have helped to put up signs on
the road from Eugene saying the fair was sold out. It
would have saved thousands of people the several hours
they waited in traffic in route to the fair, only to
find out the fair was sold out when they approached the
gate.
PS - Is it still possible to get 1996 T-shirts?
Heard about this page from: stumbled across it!
My family lined up nice and early about 9:00 am, at the car
line off of the road leading to the gate on Hwy. 126, we
were very exited and everyone else in line was too, until the
sheriff started making everyone get back out onto the hiway
and that created a big confusion, no one knew where to go then.
After all of that, we had a wonderful time, the daycare was
very full and our kids were very disappointed. The red beans
w/rice we ate, I definitely could have made better! Not real
cajun food! The entertainment was great, it was very HOT!
We purchased an anniversary VHS tape to send to the Texas
relatives. Can't wait again for next year! The Comptons

My "trips" to the fair are wonderful and I'm telling you and everyone else the only way to do it is camp it. All the fun starts when the gates close...as a matter of fact the majority of the campers probably sleep through the whole open day of the fair! But shhhhh........ that's our secret! Hope everyone enjoyed the fair this year and will enjoy it twice as much next year! Happy wandering and remember not to let the whole reality thig get to you!!

As always, the whole experience was beautiful, although gets more hectic every year. WOW! Friday sold out! And, once again, nobody died at Rock Medicine. Most wonderful part of the Fair this year? Taking my Mom to all the cool after hours events for her birthday and mine. Most difficult? The same. It seems the crowding is more difficult every year, and I noticed the ground was hardpacked and shiny after the fair this year. Don't have any great solutions, here, but what if OCF sponsored a network of Country Fairs in other states? Maybe one each month? I'd love to attend a California Country Fair, an Alaska Country Fair, and in February-how about a Hawaii Country Fair?
Seems like that might be the only way to get the crowds toned down without also diminishing the ability to reach out to new wonderful people every year. Just a thought...anyone who likes the idea, how about emailing me? FioraStar@aol.com. Blissings till next year!

This was my first journey to the fair and it was a most magical trip for me. I was so thrilled to be surrounded by such creative and genuine folks. The atmosphere of acoustic music (I'm a musician myself), parades, playfulness, theater, variety shows, food, etc. was wonderful to experience. I think that there should be a Woman's Hour at the Sauna
everyday of the fair. Other than that, my trip was a blast
and I made some great friends this year. I even found a
Fairy Goddess Mother. Her name is Simone and she is a dress
maker with a beautiful booth at the fair. I did get more

Well another OCF has come, and gone.
When you consider the organization that goes into the planning and implementation of the fair it really is amazing.
Another thing that is amazing and continues to be so after all these years is the stifling crush of humanity in attendance. It is frequently overwhelming to the point that it degrades the total fair experience. I've known lots of people who've been to the fair just one or two times and that's all because the experience was marred in every instance by the intolerable crowding. The situation encourages large numbers of one time only patrons, which I guess is (good?) because more people get the "OCF EXPERIENCE," however tempered that might be by the negative influence of the mass of bodies present. In fact an artist friend of mind who accompanied me to the fair several years back remarked that the last time that she had encountered such numbing over crowding was in Calcutta. Now that's crowded!
Is the fair board of directors more interested in the number of tickets sold? Which of course generates more capital.
Do the vendors realize or care that the over crowded conditions creates a situation where patrons simply cannot visit them all?
Does the fair board of directors wish that each and everyone who attends the Oregon Country Fair leave with the most pleasant of experiences and memories?

This year during the opening act at Main Stage, a the gentleman wearing a foxes tail and brandishing a long stick with a steamer on it, came out into the center of the crowd and started making his streamer weave thru the sky to the tribal rock. He does this every year. But this year a big green dragonfly came out of the trees and started flying in dance with the streamer. I was enraptured. I started pointing this out to the people around me and pretty soon we were all watching the dragonfly and the streamer. Then two more dragonflies came and joined in. They danced as long as the man with the foxes tail stayed. When he left, they went back to the trees. Thus teaching me that all children of the Great Mother can apprieciate both good music and cool shade. Truely, it was Magick. And Magick worth sharing.

Very fun Fair. The best thing to do at the fair is to meet
people from all over that you wouldn't run into otherwise.
The crafts, music, and entertainment are great, but meeting
people is the best. I understand some people were arrested
by the police upon leaving the fair... they were randomly
pulling people over. Also there was some property damage
by rowdies in a nearby town... I wish we could keep the
OCF all positive!
I absolutely love the attention to detail. Everywhere you
look there is a little splash of color- a trinket here, a
small wood carving there. The organizers of this event have
really got it together. To any and all future fairgoers...

Once again, a great Fair. They're all great, but all different too. I went to my first fair in 1980. It was much different then, lots more open partying, lots fewer people. I've been every year since except for 1981 and 1990.
This year seemed to embody more change than any previous fair I can remember. Yes, the physical changes were good ones. I like the way more places just to sit and relax were created---this is really important for the tired masses doing the fair. Good work. I wasn't sure about the brick wall at the Ritz at first, but I grew to quickly appreciate it. But as I talked to a lot of the "old timers" (people in their 40's and 50's) they all discussed the passage of time and how the torch is gradually, with each fair, being passed on to the next generation. A lot of people I spoke to had kids who grew up with the fair. These people felt it was time to begin letting their kids take the lead in the fair. I'm kind of in-between the two generations. I love the fact that the fair has become this magical entity that is being passed on to a whole new group.
It was fun to see some of the kids who were too young to even make change at some of the food booths back again, a year or two older, and reminding me of the time that passes with each fair.
A friend of mine in Child Care always says the new year for her begins not on January 1st but on the day after the fair. So be it. Happy New Year to all of you. Lots of love and peace to all of you who are part of the OCF and bring so much magic to all of us every year. See you in '97!!!

My folks live in Veneta and have had booth at the fair many years. While growing up in the area and hateing that backwards town and that hick Elmira High I couldn't wait to get away. At that time for me The fair was just another part of my difficult childhood but luckly I grew up and now the fair brings our family together. I thank every fairgoer for that. On another subject: Country Fair and its relationship with the neighbors. Most of the locals really don't like this fair because they don't get much fom it. Ok the Fair does donate to the community a great deal but the townships don't get the tax revenues they feel are deserved. The thing is that people should know that the Fair holds over 3/4 of a million dollars in the bank. With that money the Fair should be addressing the problems in the community better. For example why does the fair not deal with
the nearly 10000 campers without anywhere to camp but Ray's parking lot or in someone's lawn? These folks are in the area for over a week. This is the ugly side of OCF. Put that money to use. Again, thankyou for a better and better OCF each year and keep up the great work on the web. Although the Fair needs a more reliable server, EFN may be free but you get what you pay for. OCF could certainly afford to start an independant server for its site and the sites of booth members. Anyone who has been refused by or cut off by EFN.org knows what I'm talking about. Remember that its not too late to reapply your sunscreen, Melonoma is no laughing matter (unless you say it ten times fast of course). Peace & Love & Cheesecake

Not being real easy in crowds, I only spent about four hours at the Fair on Sunday. It was one of the better times I've had there. Next year think I'll come later & stay later. Seems like it was just getting going when I left. Noticed lots of new & wonderful performance artists, acting & dancing & whatall at every open space. That was nice. Food was good, altho a little on the skimpy side where I went. Too bad about the bad vibews in Veneta, based on the RG article. I'd like to see a more broadly based community effort into self policing. How can I volunteer (for whatever needs doing?) I'm a long term Celebration Eateries clean-up worker, might as well start working the Fair too. Thanks to you all again.

Although the heat was stunning, it was wonderful to be back
at the Fair after a three-year absence. The water scene is
better than ever!! I really appreciate all the effort that
went into the continuing improvements. Having been with the
Fair since 1983 in a food booth, I can really appreciate the
great changes through the years. The Spirit Tower was a great
surprise and is a wonderful structure and embodiment of the
fair's spirit. My thanks to all who created it.
I loved seeing all the painted breasts .... a new and
delightful phenomenom since I've last been to the fair.
Also, the people at Energy Park who enthusiastically
worked out our solar battery-powered night lights system were
absolutely wonderful and what a difference it made for us in
the kitchen! Yay solar power!
Also enjoyed so much seeing a son, who first came to the Fair
as a little boy, now being an integral and dedicated part of
the Recycling scene to the extent that he was getting credit
at U of O for taking part in a project attempting to reduce
the amount of trash generated at the Fair. As ever, the sense
of community, cooperation, creativity of being, the delightful
humor, variety of music, the fun of running into old friends
and making of new ones are indeed a rare treat to be savored.
And the play of light and shadow on the wonderful trees and
the sweet sound of the thrushes singing even with all that was
going on! Thanks for all the work put into making this
another great Fair.

Another great fair! Thanks to everyone associated with this year's fair! Concerning the Peach Pit: once again, the new format looks great, is concise and saves paper. However, in addition to acknowledging comments that support adding back the booth list, I would like to see the list actually added to the 1997 edition. With all of the changes in store due to flooding, etc. it seems the list is needed more than ever. It just doesn't seem practical to have thousands of folks stopping at the Info Booth to get this information (especially if you're at the other end, in the middle of 15,000 people) when we could get it in the Peach Pit with two additional pages. Please discuss this at the upcoming meeting. Thank you, Oregon Country Fair.

After hours at the Fair, wandering through the bustling village activity near Main Stage or taking a quiet stroll along dark paths (Did you have your Jimi Hendrix moment on Sat. night?) is one of the best times in life. Those are the moments being alive is made for. All the beautiful people... heavy sigh. I've just gotten home here to Connecticut. I used to live out west and when family stuff called me back to the Beast Coast and I couldn't get a decent cup of coffee, I found myself opening a coffeehouse/espresso bar. I fly out for fair every year. It's a perfectly enchanted vacation. Fair is so wonderful I'd cheerfully stand out in a dusty dry parking lot, breathing exhaust and looking out for the safety of our family members dogs in temperatures nearing or surpassing the 100 degree mark just to be a part of it. Thank you all for being there.
Only 51 weeks till fair !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And please remember and tell everyone - it's way too hot out here to bring your dog. Thanks again

Just back from another great fair. Wasn't too hot if you were willing to let the nice guy by the history booth spray you . I sometimes miss the old days when the Faire was all us not us,staff, and the public. We all need to work on this us, staff, and the public. Maybe this can be discussed along with plans for the new loop. see you at the meeting. Anyone else wish the craft inventory people would lighten up ? I feel their methods are hindering new crafts being added to the faire. later :-)

This year's Fair was great! The shows by UMO
and The Royal Famille du Cannivaux were soul-rending and
sidesplitting. Baby Gramps, Faith Petric, and Reverend
Chumleigh had me thinking so hard, I forgot to laugh. Or
was it the other way around? It was fun rebuilding the
mainstage fence this year, too. See everyone next year!

As a first-year goer, I was completely amazed at how organized it was without making guests feel like cattle! Everything was so organized yet we just wandered around and took in the sights, sounds, and tastes! It was incredible fun and has now become a yearly ritual for us! We spent Sunday there but next year we will take atleast two, maybe three days. I will recommend it to everyone I know! Check it out if you can!

We attended the fair on friday and had an absolute fantastic time. Camping at Darlings was one of the best desisions (sp) we had ever made. To park on Thurday night and walk to and from the fair was well worth the money spent.
Driving East on 126 on Saturday, I saw the traffic backed up to Colburg Rd. (I think, it the intersection with the u-haul on a T-intersection. This make me worry a little wondering if the fair is getting too big and what measures need will be taken.
Next year, I hope to particapate in the fair, planning and activities. The Fair has given me so much, I want to give back to it. Please send me info on how I can participate.
Thanks for the great time, another well done job!!!!
Thank you and see you in two weeks for Furthur.

Having Just returned to Eugene after an abscence of eighteen years, I felt very fortunate to arrive at the faire this Sunday. All was as cool as it had ever been. I feel all kinds of "warm fuzzies" for how far we've come! I particularly enjoyed UMA's show today. Let the dance of life go on!....

I love the fair. I always meet the most interesting people
there. The Ritz at night is great. It is truly a wonderful
experience there late at night with the improvizational
music, the fire pit, the singing, the sauna, the stars, the
stories, it goes on and on. I would really like to talk
with anyone who would want to E-mail and gab a bit about
fair experiences.

20 years of the community village, congratulations! My first fair was 28 years ago
My children grew up with the years of the fair. I see part of our family shared paradigm
is rekindled every year at the fair. How can we share the smiles and joy throughout the year
with all our family and friend throughout the world?
It used to seem like once a year we
ttend tommorrow (sunday).

Attended an event with the Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage about 1969. Was that the first function at the Fair Site?

A beautiful event but it has become to crowded. I'm also wondering if anyone else is bothered by the cliquish nature of the after hour festivities. The poor plebs that don't get to do it have it rubbed in their face by the bands and the choosen few.

Last year ('95) it was a privilege to join with so many
other percussionists (drumming for 7.5 hours nonstop until
my hands bled!) that I've waited all year to do it again.
This time, I'm protecting my hands with "NewSkin", however;
so as to make it even more enjoyable - without the pain. ;-)
I recommend the same to any other "drum addicts" that suffer
similar aftermath from overdoing their percussive splendors.
Oh yeah... I'm also a "ditto-head"; but I fully support the
beauty, time, efforts and spirit behind the Oregon Country Fair.
Proof that diversity is universal. (Go figure?) ;-D
I'm quite excited about today... my second year of drumming
in the tower @ OCF. Life is good. Good times for all!

Dear Kind, gentle and gererous people thank you for a wonderful day at the Fair. Even though the temperatures reached into the high 90's maybe even 100 degrees today was a very cool experience for my teenage daughter her boyfriend an me and from the looks of it for many many thousands of others too.
Peace and Love,
mac

Well, here is the first entry in the OCF Guestbook. It has been quite an adventure to get to a point that we can include this. Most all of the effort to achieve this was put forth by Kelley Rogers, who stepped forward when I had just about given up. Kelley's help and support is tremendously appreciated because without it we probably wouldn't have this great guestbook. So I hope all you enjoy sharing your contact with the Fair's WEB site. Tell your friends we're here. Maybe I'll get out from the shadows and see you at the Fair. Marshall
