Welcome to Aerie Academy

School should be a place where all students can enjoy learning. Each student is unique, has individual interests, and learns in a personal way. But the one-size-fits-all method of teaching used by traditional schools leaves some students bored and leaves others behind. Aerie provides an alternative to these institutions.
Aerie Academy is an independent, non-sectarian, alternative school. It is registered with the Oregon Department of Education and is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges as a "special purpose school." Aerie admits students of any race, color, ethnic origin, religion, and sexual orientation. Aerie's student body is limited in size in order to maintain a teacher-pupil ratio of one-to-nine or better.
The mission of Aerie Academy is to provide a place where students enjoy learning -- a place where students feel good about themselves and where they develop the skills necessary to make wise choices throughout their lives.
Serving Grades 9-12
Admission. Aerie Academy is a special purpose school that accepts students who desire or require additional teacher attention or who can benefit from a small class size. Currently Aerie serves students in grades eight through twelve. Enrollment may be for either full-time, or part-time (mornings-only) for students concurrently enrolled at another school.
To enroll, contact Aerie Academy. Admission may involve an interview with the applicant, an examination, completion of an assessment and evaluation battery, and/or attendance at Aerie on a trial basis.
Tuition & Fees. Tuition at Aerie Academy currently is $6000 per year for a full-time student; $4000 per year for a part-time student. The tuition schedule is subject to change. Tuition is payable in ten monthly payments. Also there is a $200 supply fee which is payable in two payments. In special cases, full or partial tuition waivers and scholarships may be granted.
The School Day. Aerie Academy operates on the same holiday calendar as the Eugene Public Schools (4J). The school day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Students may leave campus to get lunch, or they may bring their own foo d.
Courses, Credits & Diploma
Curriculum. The curriculum includes Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, Physical Education, Music, Fine Arts, and more.
Instruction. Instruction occurs in small classes, in groups, and individually. The method chosen depends on the subject matter, the instructor, and the student.
Some course work may begin with a presentation by a primary instructor in a large class which then breaks up into smaller groups, or in which one or two instructors help particular students while the primary instructor guides the others. Some clas ses may involve smaller groups entirely; and in some cases one-on-one instruction is the best choice.
Grading and Honors-level Performance. To receive course credit at Aerie Academy, a student must demonstrate a mastery of the subject matter as evidenced by consistent, honors-level performance on assignments, presentations, interrogatories, and classroom participation. One unit is awarded for each yearlong, 135-hour course. Instead of letter grades, students receive narrative evaluations as grades. Simply awarding letter grades of B, B+, A-, and A are inadequate to evaluate and characterize the performance of an Aerie Academy student.
Credits are Transferable. As an accredited school, course credits from Aerie Academy are accepted by other schools.
High School Diploma. Aerie Academy will award diplomas to every student who either (1) attends Aerie Academy on a full-time basis during the four years of high school ; or (2) fulfills the high school requirements set forth by Oregon law while attending Aerie Academy; or (3) completes an alternative education program approved by Aerie.
Faculty. All of Aerie's instructors meet each student's needs by changing teaching methods, ideas, assignments, or anything that will encourage and enthuse students in their learning process. By recognizing the personal and academic factors affecting a student, the instructors can identify a student's learning abilities and encourage the student to develop his or her own unique way of learning. Aerie's programs accelerate, remediate and enrich these abilities.
Location. Aerie Academy is located at 140 East 13th Avenue (between Oak & Pearl Streets) in downtown Eugene, Oregon, within walking distance of the University of Oregon, the Eugene public library, and the Eugene Civic Center.
