Interactive PowerFlow Program (IPF), ver. 2.10 for UNIXWARE:

Interactive Powerflow (IPF), version 2.10, running on the PC platform with the UNIXWARE operating system. This covers hardware requirements for computer system PC setup, pre-compiled IPF program executables installation for Unixware. Version 2.10 has been tested with Univel Unixware 1.1; Novell Unixware 2.0, 2.01, and 2.03; and SCO Unixware 2.10, 2.12, 2.13. Tests with SCO Unixware 7.0 are pending.

The Interactive PowerFlow Program models the balanced steady-state operation of an electric power network. It is used by power system planners and design engineers to investigate electric power networks, determine bus voltage distribution, line real and reactive power flows, line overloads, system reactive requirements, area controls, effect of load shedding, generator dropping, and line outages.

Currently, the program efficiently uses computer resources through the implementation of advanced techniques of large system analyses, including the Newton-Raphson method for solving second order algebraic equations and sparse-matrix computation techniques. Typically, it solves a 12,000 bus network and requires 72 MB of virtual storage. The state-of-the-art Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been integrated into the IPF using the X Window System/Motif.

The IPF runs on various platforms which support the X Window System/Motif - Window Manager, Graphic User Interface. At BPA, IPF is used on VAX/VMS mainframes, VAX/VMS Stations, DECStations, DEC-Alpha, and properly configured PCs running Unixware or Linux. For PC’s running Unixware or Linux the recommended configuration is:


HARDWARE (minimum requirements, all hardware must be supported by UnixWare):

o 486 with 72MB of RAM, 33 MHz

o 500 MB hard drive with IDE interface or SCSI interface

o 3.5-inch 1.44 MB floppy drive

o 1024x768 resolution (non-interlaced), 256-color video card

o 14-inch SVGA color monitor, 1024x768 resolution (non-interlaced)

o Standard "101" keyboard

o 3-button PS/2 or serial mouse (2-button usable with 3-button emulation)

o DC6000 Series 1/4-inch tape drive for backup, IPF software load, and UNIX load if no CDROM

o CDROM (optional, but makes UNIX/Linux load and updating easier)

o Ethernet network card (optional for LAN environment)

o 14.4 kbps modem card (optional for telephone dialup environment)

o Network Interface Card - 3COM 3C509 ISA

o Video Card - Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM 2MB PCI - S3 968 chipset (1024x768, 256-colors, MIN) or other video card supported by UNIXWARE

o Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling, or other; (300-watts, required)

o Mouse: 3-button PS/2 or Serial, Logitech, Microsoft Compatible

o CDROM: Toshiba 2X SCSI, external or internal

  • o Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling, or other; (300-watts, required)

    o Mouse: 3-button PS/2 or Serial, Logitech, Microsoft Compatible

    o CDROM: Toshiba 2X or faster IDE internal, or SCSI - external or internal

    Note: SCO Unixware Ver 2.1.2, Personal Edition is used on this dual processor PC.

    This system can be set up as "Dual-Boot", if one adds an IDE hard drive for another

    operating system, e.g. DOS/Windows; etc.

    The IPF compiled executables for UNIX (UnixWare) are available only on 1/4 inch QIC tape (150 MB "DC6150" size, or 525 MB "DC6525" size).
