Census Returns

The purpose of this accounting of several generations of Wesslings from Lingen Stadtflur is to demonstrate the continuity of their residence at Haus No. 19. These census returns, though, were not cited as part of the process of proving the ownership of the Neubauerei.

In the Lingen Stadt archives there were a number of civil census returns for those residing in Lingen Stadt and in Lingen Stadtflur. However, there were no returns for Altenlingen, Estringen, or Laxten. For the most part, the returns were of a statistical nature with only the 1861 returns providing the names of the members of a given household.

The census returns for Lingen Stadtflur were separately documented beginning in 1816 at which time there were 190 inhabitants. In 1817 the population dropped to 97 and in 1821 it had increased to 158 and in 1824 to 225. By 1833 the number of residents had doubled.

The 1816 census does not include an entry for Haus No.19 in Stadtflur but at Haus No. 177 in Stadt Lingen a Wessling woman lived with 3 males and 3 other females, all of whom were Catholics.

In the 1824 census at the same address in Lingen Stadt was a Wessling woman living alone. Also, at Haus No. 274 there was a male, W. Wessling.

The 1824 records for Stadtflur showed that there were 4 Wesslings at Haus No. 19 -  2 males and 2 females with no ages given for them.

In the archives of St. Bonifatius Church there exists a parish census for the year 1832.

Since the parish's records have enabled us to learn the names and the ages of family members and inasmuch as our research has identified Wohnhaus Nr. 19 in Lingen Stadtflur as being that of Wesslings Neubauerei from circa 1819 until 1882, the returns are as follows:

In 1913 a Heinrich Wessling was living at Östliche Stadtflur 10, at Östliche Stadtflur 7 was a Krieger and at Östliche Stadtflur 11 was a Beckmann. According to a land map all 3 had land atributed to their surnames in the same general area of Lingen Stadtflur. E.g., Wesslingskamp
