Rolefs of Sögel

Source:  Sögel im Spiegel seiner Häuser 1
This book follows the ownership of various parcels of land in Sögel. For example, Haus Nr. 64 was mentioned in the "Schatzregister von 1672" with the head of the household being a Meinert Lücken, 2 the son-in-law of the Erbauer. Today that property would be located on Berßener Straße.

Findings:

  • Rudolph Spieker married Helena N.N. (in Sögel?).
  • A daughter, Catharina Rolefs (Spieker) married on November 11, 1670 Meinert Lücken from Groß Berßen.  His surname was changed to Spiekermann and he died on May 31, 1685.
  • Another daughter(?), Angela Rolefs (Spieker) married on September 9, 1683 Henrich Jansen from Sögel.  He died on May 5, 1718.

  • Their daughter, Anna Henrichs, who was baptised on February 3, 1684, married Theodor Nortmann on May 31, 1718.

  • Their daughter, Anna Nortmann, who was baptised on March 6, 1720, married Theodor Rolefs on date unknown, but presumably in Sögel.  She died on December 18, 1787. Theodor Rolefs died on February 26, 1777 and he had been a Schuster by profession.

  • Their son, Rudolf Rolefs, who was baptised on October 28, 1743, married Margaretha Thormann on November 22, 1778.  She was baptised on December 7, 1754 and was from Sögel.  He died on February 17, 1816 and she died on August 16, 1825.
Rudolf Rolfes may have been granted a patent to become the shoemaker (Hofschuputzer) at Schloß Clemenswerth.
  • The heir of Rudolf Rolefs was Hermann Heinrich Rolefs, who was baptised on August 12, 1782. He married Anna Volker from Börger on November 23, 1813.
  • The heir, Anna Helena Rolefs, was baptised on November 16, 1818 and she married Johann Kathmann from Kathen on February 9, 1847.

Additional Information:
Anna Aleid Rolefs married Jan Hermann Wesseling in Lingen at the Church of St. Bonifatius on February 7, 1790.  According to the Lingen parish's records her name was Johanna, she was 24 years old, and was from Sögel. 4

Status Animarum 1749 for the Sögel parish lists a Lucas Lücken and a Dierck Spieker as neighbors in 1740 and in 1749.  In 1740 the name "Lucaß Lücken" was used by both the father and a son, age 26.

Assumptions:

  • Anna Aleid Wesseling was related to this Rolefs family.  She was baptised on January 7, 1761 in Sögel and her parents were Dirk Rolefs and Anna Nortmann. The sponsors were Lukas Lüken and Aleidis Nortmann.
  • Theodor Rolefs may have been from Werpelo and prior to that time the Rolefs family may have been in Stavern Minor, where there also resided a Lucas Lüken. The Nortmann family may have been from Werlte.

NOTES:

It seems that the early surnames were patronymics. The children of Rudolf Speiker were named Rolefs. The child of Meinert Lücken was named Meiners. The child of Heinrich Jansen was named Henrichs. The practice may have ended circa 1700.
