Elk Hunt 2000
Sometime back in June or July, Nora was tested for food sensitivity. Of all the meats, she was least sensitive to Elk. I talked to the one guy I knew might be able to help--Doug Kelley. He said that he was planning to go hunting for elk in October and that I could go along if I wanted. I made the arrangements, bought the hunting license, borrowed a gun from Doug, and took the time off from work.
We set up camp about 7 miles from Sisters, Oregon near Black Butte. Doug and I hunted hard for the entire week and didn't even see a cow. We saw some nice deer, but no elk.
Here is an image of the harvest tag that was
not filled.
This is a picture of the campsite. The big green tent is where we had our beds. It is made from fence poles and a truck tarp. Very big, very warm, very dry.
We camped with two other great and mighty hunters. Derek and Mack hunted alone. Derek saw the most elk and even saw a HUGE bull, but couldn't get a shot off. Mack, like Doug and I, didn't see any elk.
Here is a picture of Doug and me after half a day of hunting.
This is where we slept. My bed is on the left. Doug made the wood stove. It was toasty as long as we kept it full of wood. The back tarp is from an election campaign or something.
The gun I used was a Springfield 30-06 with 200 grain Barns X hollow point bullets. The gun I will use next year is an Interarms Whitworth 30-06 with composite stock, ported barrel, and Simmons 9x scope. I'll use the same bullets because, obviously, I didn't get to use any of them this year.
Despite not seeing anything, the trip was great. It was fun to relax and not think about work. We found a bat cave too --while hunting one day.
It was a great trip and a great hunt.
