Segment 2: The Four-step Training Process
Throughout the stake missionary training program, this four-step process is followed:
1. Explain. Person conducting stake missionary training
will explain concepts and ideas and lead discussion. This step
sometimes involves showing video segments.
2. Demonstrate. Live demonstrations or role playing helps
to give missionaries an example of situations where they are finding
people to teach or teaching the gospel. This sometimes involves
a video segment.
3. Practice. Stake missionaries are given opportunities
during training to practice inviting someome to learn about the
gospel, attend church, or read from the Book of Mormon.
4. Evaluate. Stake missionaries are encouraged to help
one another by giving feedback after practicing.
-be positive
-be specific
-describe
-don't criticize
-create equal relationships
-try again
The purpose of this short practice session is to give missionaries experience in the four-step training method by practicing sharing a favorite passage from the Book of Mormon with an investigator.
The video segment gives an example and brings up the following
questions:
What went well?
How would missionaries improve?
Divide into pairs for practice. One person takes the part of the missionary and the other the part of the nonmember. Those assuming the role of the stake missionary should imagine that they and a full-time missionary are visiting in the home of an investigator when the full-time missionary asks the stake missionary to share a favorite Book of Mormon scripture. Give feedback and trade roles. Each person has the opportunity to take the part of the nonmmeber and stake missionary.
Conclude the session by reassembling and discussing experiences.
