Comments:   I'm an old disc jockey who dropped out of the commercial radio scene in '86 when the consultants started to rule the airwaves. I think the micro radio movement is the best thing since free-form radio of the late sixties, early seventies. Keep it up, guys. Hope they start something up here (the Portland metro area) soon. There isn't shit to listen to.

Comments:   "Eliancito", a song about Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy being held in Miami, is now available in mp3 format on the worldwide web. Written and sung by Dave Welsh, a San Francisco Bay area activist and composer, the catchy calypso-style tune and topical lyrics make a powerful appeal to, as the song says, "let Eliancito go!" Dave is backed up by two other accomplished Bay area musicians, Jon Fromer on guitar and Jason Moen on keyboard. The song has been heard at demonstrations in support of Elian's return to his father in Washington, San Francisco, Vancouver, and other cities. It has also been aired by several radio stations in the United States and Canada. To play "Eliancito" on your computer you must have an mp3 player, downloadable from http://www.mp3.com, installed on your machine. For best quality, click on the hyperlink below and save the file to your hardrive (It will take 10-20 minutes to download.): http://www.zerogrowth.org/Welsh-Eliancito.mp3 Then double click on the file you saved to play it. To play "Eliancito" in stream, click on the hyperlink below suitable for your tranmission (modem) speed (128, 64, 32 mbps): http://www.zerogrowth.org/Welsh-Eliancito128.mp3 http://www.zerogrowth.org/Welsh-Eliancito64.mp3 http://www.zerogrowth.org/Welsh-Eliancito32.mp3 CDs of "Eliancito" are available free to broadcasters, who may use it without consideration of royalties, by calling (925) 682-5809. Individuals may purchase the song on tape for $5 by sending a check made out to Dave Welsh to P.O. Box 1863, Martinez, CA 94553. Following are the lyrics to "Eliancito": Let little Elian Gonzalez go Home to Cuba, let the little boy go Back home to his papa, His grandmas and his grandpas, Gotta send the little boy back home. Chorus: Time to let Eliancito go Home to Cuba, let the little boy go Can you imagine just how sad he Feels without his Daddy (Got to) let Eliancito go. 2nd Chorus: We gotta stop - stop - the blockade of Cuba Stop - stop - the blockade of Cuba Stop - stop - the blockade of Cuba Time to let Eliancito go. Washed overboard on the stormy sea A long way from his family Holdin' on to an inner tube With the fightin' spirit of a Cuban That was his destiny. - Chorus - Elian survived the waters cold And he's only just six years old, And after all that danger He's kidnapped by some strangers, Held hostage by the Gusanos. - Chorus - - 2nd Chorus - Elian was rescued from the deep Now he's surrounded by those right-wing creeps The crazies in Miami Don't care about the family Gotta set little Elian free (now is the time to) - Chorus - It's time to learn to live and let live now It's time to love thy neighbor somehow Uncle Sam throws his weight around The Cold War has stayed around Forty-seven years too long. Time to let Eliancito go Home to Cuba, let the little boy go, The embargo is a crime, and now is the time, To let little Eliancito go. © Dave Welsh, 1999

Comments:   I wish I could hear your free radio, all we have down here is boring stations with a lot of commercials and an endlessly looping play list. One company JACOR owns or controls 10-12 stations in this town. The problem I see with the current situation in Radio is the misperception that the airwaves should be owned by the government, and frequencies should be liscensed to individuals or companies. There is no basis in the U.S. constitution for the formation of speech regulating agencies such as the FCC, and the FEC for that matter. No license should be required. Frequencies should be first come first serve. Tort law should be the basis for resolving interference related conflicts. Frequencies should be traded freely on the open market, like stocks on the stock exchange. Then everyone who has the desire will have the opportunity to broadcast. I pray for that day to come.

Comments:   On May 7, 1998, I was phoned by Mike Broderick, Public Affairs Director for KBOO 90.7 FM, Portland. Mike told me that, due to "scheduling changes" and "no advocacy" on the Program Committee for my show ("The Witching Hour," which ran alternate Sundays 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.), I was being cancelled at the end of May--no hard feelings, we hope you'll continue to support KBOO and the goal of community broadcasting, etc. (This, despite the fact that "The Witching Hour" had just finished its most successful Pledge Drive ever less than two months before.) Letters, calls, listeners testifying before the Committee--all to no avail; the Committee would not alter its precious new schedule. Since then, I've been battling KBOO's more-politically-correct-than-thou management to try to get "The Witching Hour"--the only regularly-scheduled program dealing with Paganism, Witchcraft, Warrior-Philosophers and alternative, non-mainstream spirituality--back on the air. Currently, KBOO has put two hours of Christian Gospel music on in its place (despite the fact that it goes head-to-head with Gospel programming on a commercial station at the same time, in direct violation of its Program Charter, which calls for giving air time to "under-represented and unrepresented" points of view), and further keeps airing "safe" programming which either has no audience, or else duplicates programs heard elsewhere. In the spirit of Free Radio, it's time to re-liberate Portland's radio scene. We can do it either one of two ways: build a truly Free Radio Station--the type that KBOO started out to be, before bureaucrats and self-interested types co-opted it--or fight the Powers of Darkness and re-claim KBOO for the cause of Truth, Justice, and Freedom. For those of you who are knowledgeable about starting up a Free Radio Station, I'd welcome any and all help you can spare. For those of you who are willing to carry the war of liberation to KBOO on a more conventional front, be it known that anyone who joins KBOO ($20/year, "limited income" membership) and attends THREE consecutive Program Committee meetings, automatically becomes a voting member of the Committee on their fourth meeting. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month at KBOO, 20 SE 8th Avenue, Portland; the next one is February 9 at 7 p.m. "For evil to triumph, it is sufficient for good men to do nothing." The choice, as always, is ours. Yours in Freedom, The Bear
