From Paul Bronson pbronson@nwlink.com :
Found Selah BRONSON on:
1) a Waterbury resident married to an "Ann Daily" listing two children:
John and b.1816 and Ann b.1830. These dates and names could be wrong being
that the names of the children's birthdays are so far apart.
2) on a muster roll of the Revolutionary War listing soldiers from Hartford
County, CT; listing a soldier named Selah Bronson (perhaps this guy was
your Selah's pop - these New Englanders almost always passed down their
names to their children).
3) a child listed named Selah Bronson b. 26Feb1786 d. at Oswego, NY, the
son of Elijah b. 15May1755, the son of Lieut. Josiah b. Jun1703, son of Dr.
Isaac b. 1670, son of Isaac 7Dec1645, son of John. These dates and names
could be wrong as well (taken from a very old history of Waterbury, CT
proven flawed other cases).
Oswego town hall - 315-343-2586 8am-1 2-4pm, called 5/13/97 but they don't
have anything before 1881
I found a page from the 1830 NY State
Census that an historian I wrote to had sent me, and there are two Selah
Bronsons recorded: 1) in Fairfield, Herkimer Co. and 2) in Oswego, Oswego
Co.
Except that the Patriot Selah has a pension file from his service on
record. The abstract lists him as son of Titus of Farmington.
There may be more than one Titus; the Titus "of Waterbury" served in the
Rev. War and his children are listed in the Waterbury histories, none of
which is Selah. According to the pension abstract Selah served in the place
of his father Titus "of Farmington".
In the Daughters of the American Lineage books the patriot Selah is listed
as having married (1) ______ (2) Ann Daily (3) Anna Hopkins.
The dates of birth and death of Selah, the son of Elijah of
Waterbury are given clearly in the two histories. "The Abstract of Rev. War
Pension Files" p. 397 states clearly he "lived with his father Titus
Bronson at Farmington (now Berlin) when he enl as a sub for his father" it
goes on to say he "was b 1763 in Farmington CT & at age 23 or 24 moved to
Harwington CT for some yrs & later removed to Fairfield NY for 2 yrs then
about 1810 moved to Waterbury CT, sol m Anna Hopkins on 5 5 Oct 1834 & sol
d 27 Jan 1842, wid appl 13 Mar 1857 Litchfield Cty CT aged 64, sol's son
John W. Bronson appl for BLW 11 Ddc 1880 Blackhawk Ctyt IA aged 74 a
resident of Waterloo IA". There is a Titus on the same muster roll as the
patriot Selah, and this is obviously the Titus of Waterbury whose children
are listed in both histories of Waterbury and are too young to have been in
the war.

Hi Rick,
I check and could find very little of Selah. He is buried in
Gaines Cemetery and probably so is his wife although she has no stone.
Selah was involved with a lot of the early establishment such as
the ist court house in Gaines etc. Interesting fact is that he once
lived in what was refered then as the Mansion House. The house I now
own is on that very land. However I could find no references to his
family at all. There was no BRONSONS living in Gaines by 1850.
Wish I could have been of more help.

From: Boyd Bronson Yawguts@aol.com
I visited the genealogical library in Salt Lake City this afternoon and spent
some time looking for Selah Bronson. I searched the compilation of
genealogical records that Colonel Herbert Bronson Enderton put together in
1969. The book is some 300 to 400 pages long. I found two Selah Bronsons,
but neither of them were the one you were looking for. One was the 3rd child
of Titus Bronson, and Anna Wheadon, born about 1765 and the other was the 5th
child of Elijah Bronson and Lois Bunnel, born 26 February 1786, died Oswego,
NY; married Ann Daily; 2 children.
I was able to find your Selah Bronson and his wife Nancy Collins. Their
family group sheet was submitted by a library patron. However, there was no
record of Selah's father and mother. There was a record of Nancy Collin's
father and mother. I found a couple of history books telling of the founding
of Gaines in Orleans county and some of the people who were instrumental in
that endeavor. Mention was made of a man named Hosea Bronson and another
named Elisha Bronson, but no pedigree was given. Do you know where Selah was
born? Perhaps when I next visit the library I can enlist the aid of one of
the experts there who might give us some suggestions of where to continue to
search.

From: Richard Bronson
Subject: Selah Bronson, The Holy Grail, and other unattainable things.
Date: Friday, May 30, 1997 10:24 AM
Hi, Paul,
I looked up Private Selah, b 3 Nov 1762, d 27 Jan 1842 or 1843, wife Anna
Hopkins, and his Bronson line(s) run Selah, Titus, Timothy (1701-1780),
Samuel (1665-1741/42), to Richard, the immigrant. Secondary line from
grandmother (wife of Timothy) Dorcas Hopkins, which runs Dorcas (abt
1704-1747), Joseph Hopkins (abt 1671-1712), Stephen (Sr) Hopkins,
whose wife was Dorcas Bronson. Dorcas was a daughter of John Bronson,
the immigrant. One of those cases where both immigrant brothers are
tied into the family, meaning of course that Dorcas Hopkins was a
cousin to Timothy Bronson, her husband. Smallish gene pool in those
days! Anything I expound on the origins of Rick Bronson's Selah would
be strictly guesswork. There are some possibilities, which I already
pointed out to Rick's great aunt, who is also working this problem.
The possibilities, however, are just that - not a shred of evidence.
This mystery Selah just popped onto the horizon fairly recently - was
not aware of the problem until a couple of years ago. In time, I may
come up with an answer - I have a lot of lines out, just waiting for
"bites". Meanwhile, my advice to Rick would be to go to Orleans Co.,
NY (county seat Albion), to see if the county historian or county
clerk can turn up anything. Also, peruse land records and estate
records there if possible. Our Titus, father of the Rev War Selah,
had three other boys - one of the three might have named a child Selah
in honor of his Rev War brother, or for that matter, Selah himself may
have had a child we don't know of. There are just too many possible
answers involved in trying to do this thing by name association, if
you know what I mean. Since Rick's trail ends in Orleans County, that
is the place to look, as far as I am concerned, unless one of us gets
lucky, and just stumbles across some answers. I owe a letter to a
very shrewd lady who lives near Syracuse, NY, and if I get back to her
anytime soon, I'll ask her to see if she can find anything,
particularly since the "other Selah" apparently hung around Onondaga
County. Most likely, all she would find unless she really digs in,
will be data on that other man, but you never know.
Dick.
Rick - you have probably seen this, but this is what I have on your Selah.
Source: French, 1860 Gazetteer of NY State, says that previous to erection
of County buildings at Albion, courts were held at the home of Selah Bronson
in Gaines Village, Orleans County. This country was settled in, say the
1820-30s, with the coming of the Erie Canal. Orleans became a county in
1824, derived from Genesee.
Source: Landmarks of Orleans Co. (NY), Signor, 1894, has many mentions of
Selah Bronson.
p 3. Act of 1824. Justice of the Peace actions held at his house in Gaines.
p 4. A committee also met there on the 3d Monday of May, 1826, to nominate
Justices of the Peace.
p 5. First meeting of the board of supervisors held at his house per the
act cited on p 3. On the 1st Monday of June 1826, supervisors met there
again. The house was known as the Mansion House, and stood on the northwest
corner of Ridge and Oak Orchard Roads, having been erected by William Perry
in 1816. It was a large, 3 story building of wood, with high Grecian
columns, one of the oldest, most imposing structures between the Niagara and
Genesee Rivers. A hotel, it was the leading place of entertainment in the
village, a stage house, and the principle place of resort for leading
citizens. It sheltered many distinguished visitors from abroad, including
General (Winfield?) Scott and Henry Clay. Listed as its owners over time
are Mr. Perry, Selah Bronson, P. McOmber, E. Curtis, Bronson & Collins, etc.
It was kept open until 1842, burned the following year.
With all this info, and as important as he apparently was, we should be
able to find his father's name somewhere, I would think!
Well, that about summarizes my thoughts for today. Hope you are both
enjoying a good spring - has been a bit wet, eh what? Not bad the last few
days though.
Good hunting, Dick

NY did not keep any vital records until after 1881. There is NO marriage
certificate to be had. You might find a church record IF you can find which
church she was married in. The only town that might have been in this
county was Smith Mills and I do not think it was even there in 1812 so
probably was a different SMITHS MILLS Ellisburg is in Jefferson or Lewis
county and perhaps there is a Smiths Mills there also.
