Rebecca J. Littman
Music Librarian with Technology Specialization

Singer of the music of Hildegard von Bingen and other music of the early sort, Bassoonist, & Pathological X-Phile.

I am also a cat lover, an amateur photographer, and web site builder (other than this one, I maintain the web page for the Southeast Chapter of the Music Library Association, and the Music Library at East Carolina University). I'll soon have pages that reflect those interests, watch this space for details.

There's more about me here. Or come visit me at the Music Library at East Carolina University .

As a librarian, I am extremely concerned about Intellectual Freedom and censorship of the Internet. The Internet Community has banded together to present a unified opposition to the Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA). A few of the more than 30 or ganizations that have lent their name to the Citizens Internet Empowerment Coalition are: the American Library Association, America Online, the Association of Research Libraries, the American Association of Newspaper Editors, Netcom, Compuserve , the Freedom to Read Foundation, and Microsoft.

"Just as the strength of the Internet is chaos, so the strength of our liberty depends upon the chaos and cacophony of the unfettered speech the First Amendment protects."
--Sloviter, Chief Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, et al., 11 June 1996.

On 26 June 1997, the United States Supreme Court, by unanimous vote, ruled the CDA unconstitutional.

The fight for Freedom of access on the Internet is by no means over, however. Libraries will continue to protect the rights of the public to access materials within their walls, and they will continue to encourage parents to be involved in with their children's internet use in the same way they are involved in choosing the books they read.

To learn more, please take a look at these web-sites and watch for the or the 24 Hours for Democracy logo for other sympathetic sites. If you find one that you think is particularly interesting, please let me know and I will add it.

One WWW site that I like to visit often (out of longing for the weather mostly ) is my alma mater The University of Washington. On a clear day you can even see Mt. Rainier from their cambot.

You are visitor # and I'd love it if you would sign my guestbook !
