Well, my résumé gives a good, but sort of dry, description of my background. There's a lot more to me than just dates and places.
Maxine, the cat (who is now over 17 years old!), and I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in February 1998 where I am the Head of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Music Library . UWM is the second largest school in the Wisconsin system, second only to UW-Madison. Between Library School in Seattle and moving to Milwaukee, we lived in Greenville, NC where I was Music Librarian with Technology Specialization in the Joyner Music Library at East Carolina University.
Moving to Milwaukee has been great... one of the best things is that it means that I have a sister COG in town, Lisa. She lives about 4 blocks away from me, and ironically, also works at UWM. We get together pretty often. Another great thing is that I'm now only a little over an hour from my friends Don & Liz and their kids Zach and Zoë.
Milwaukee also
has great restaurants, great BEER !
, and
amazing cultural opportunities. As a starter take a look at The Milwaukee Symphony, Florentine Opera, Milwaukee Repertory Theater. The
MOST amazing thing, though, is the 'new' wing of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Designed by Santiago
Calatrava, the building looks like a ship about to set sail across Lake
Michigan. It's as incredible on the inside as it from the outside.
Milwaukee is also a city of festivals. There is an ethnic festival of some kind every weekend throughout the summer, and then on top of that there are church festivals and live music in the parks around the city on a nearly constant basis... To see more of what's going on in Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin, take a look at OnMilwaukee.Com and OnWisconsin.Com.
In addition to being a music librarian, I am a bassoonist and singer by
training and I continue to perform and teach them on a limited basis. I
read a lot of contemporary American fiction (Tom Robbins, John Irving,
Anne Tyler, & Ken Kesey are among my favorites), Science Fiction (Orson
Scott Card, Neil Stephenson, William Gibson, & Isaac Asimov), and other
literature about everything from entertainment to computers (I am a rabid
MacHead)and contemporary society. I also
watch old scifi movies and tv shows, and the Food Channel (what would I do
without cable !
).
You're probably wondering why my web page is on the Eugene Freenet if I live 2000 miles away. There's really a very good explanation...
I was born and raised in Eugene, OR where I was active in practically every music ensemble there was (except the ones that were only string instruments... I don't do strings) from elementary through high school at South Eugene High School. I went to music school at the University of Oregon for two years before transferring to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After I graduated I took a stab at a degree in musicology at UC Davis . I finally answered my true calling when I moved to Seattle in 1992 to get my M.L.S. at the University of Washington 's Graduate School of Library and Information Science , now called the iSchool (YUCK!).
While I was in Greenville, I spent my time being webmaster to the COG1 as you've seen already, but I also do this
professionally. Part of my job as a Music Librarian is to maintain theUWM Music Library's website.
And I also run the web page for the Music Library Association, Midwest
Chapter, (MWMLA) and for theMusic OCLC User's Group (MOUG).
So
you see I'm a pretty busy person...
Since arriving in Milwaukee, and at UWM I have made some terrific
friends, taught the Graduate Research in Music course for the Music
Department 3 times, and will be teaching a course in Music Librarianship
for the UWM School of Information Studies (SOIS) in the spring of 2004.
I am the 2002-03 President of the Board of Directors for Early Music Now, an arts
presenting group that brings performers of music before 1800 to town.
My PHOTO ALBUM, which is both photos of me, my friends, and my photographic works, is loaded now. But check back, I'm adding more photos as I get them cleaned up. In addition I have a sort of fragmented website at UWM... go here that has more photos on it.
