Large Movable Paintings

For several years, I have been painting on cambric cloth, more recently making large movable paintings. This cousin to wall paper is made from cotton and is fire resistant. The cloth lies flat and does not need to be stretched for painting like canvas. Cambric cloth is lightweight, is not expensive and easy to paint on. It comes on large roles 30 yards long. Sizes vary up to 92 inches wide. What those numbers mean is that large paintings can be made in the convenience of the studio and then installed anywhere indoors.

Using cambric cloth offers two primary advantages. First, the painting is made in the studio. That is far more convenient for me which translates into better value for you. Second, painting in the studio is less intrusive for the final location of the mural whether it is commercial or residential. The installation time depends on variables like windows, doors to cut out and pieces to fit together; but takes far less time than painting on location. One 7 1/2 x 15 foot painting required two people 30 minutes to install. Another that was more complex took 12 hours.

Installing the painting is not complicated. The cloth can be applied just like wall paper with the normal wallpaper adhesive, or only with small staples. Using staples and small amounts of adhesive allows the painting to be removed easily and relocated. That is the very attractive feature of painting on cambric cloth, large paintings can be removed from the wall, rolled up and relocated. Designs can accommodate windows and doors.

Backdrops for trade shows can be painted on cambric cloth. The painting can be rolled up and put in a tube for transport and safe keeping. Grommets can be added for stretching the backdrop.

The following photos show several paintings made on cambric cloth and how it is applied to the wall. Punch on the thumbnails to view larger image and explanation.
