Re: Frankport/Sisters Rock

Dear Mr. Carrier

On the Southern Oregon Coast there exists an outstanding and unique area of coastline that has been used by the public for at least 60 years. Known as Frankport/Sisters Rock, it is one of Oregon’s "special places." Unfortunately it is privately owned and could be closed to the public by the company that owns it. The State has an opportunity to solve this problem by acquiring this property. Our goal is to protect this area and ensure continued access for fisherman, divers, hikers, surfers, and campers.

Frankport/Sisters Rock is north of Gold Beach and south of Humbug State Park in Curry County, and is one of the few areas along that section of coast that offers some protection from the wind and waves. The beaches on each side of the rock outcropping are used for recreational purposes, and host an abundance of sea life. There are views from the bluffs above the beach where one can see miles of ocean and coastline. The area is visible from the Coast Highway and is easily accessible on foot or by motorized vehicle.

Generations of Oregonians have used Frankport/Sisters Rock. Many of them do not know that the State doesn’t already own it. Those who do know are concerned about the prospect of losing access. They are concerned about the potential for development or quarrying the rock that exists there. Such activities could forever ruin a magnificent and unique area that should be preserved for the public.

We are asking you to act now to prevent the destruction or loss of this unique property. The State for Oregon will benefit form the purchase of this property and continued access for recreational users. Oregon has a national reputation for its Coastal protection efforts. Frankport/Sisters rock is the most used and valued piece of non-public land in Curry County and would be a tremendous addition to our open beach heritage. Please make the purchase of Frankport/Sisters Rock your highest priority for coastal land acquisition.

Sincerely, Richard Gabriel, Board of Directors
