Adopt a highway program. We only picked up half as many bags of trash our second clean up, compared to our first. Yippeeee! Less trash on the highway, we are making a difference! We should get our sign now. We are hoping to get lots of volunteers so that we can start cleaning up the beach as well.
Next clean up is Saturday 13 October 2001.
Dave Revell and Rondi Robison have prepared a full educational plan to educate the public on marine protected areas. They are also working with the Portland Audubon society. We recently wrote a letter to the state about the Beach Bill and clean water testing. We offered our expertise and volunteers to help coordinate a water quality testing and monitoring program.
Last weekend in September. The Northern CA/Southern OR chapter will be there with a booth. We are planning to go down and support them. Billy is checking to make sure that they are aware that we are planning to come down and help out.
Billy has been getting more and more folks who are interested. The DEQ is helping us out. Portland members Josh and Markus are helping out. Patrick has indicated he would like to help out. Samples need to be taken regularly, the same week and same locations every month. We ask for a one year commitment. Training session will be in October. Kevin suggested our having a representative from the DEQ at the training session. Billy will contact PJ about this. We need as many volunteers as possible. Ideally, we would like to have four different volunteers collecting at the same location each month. Each volunteer takes a different week of the month. We would also like to have several different locations. For four locations, four volunteers – that is 16 volunteers!!
If anyone has any information about the surf shop in Coos Bay, Billy would like to know. He was just down there and the surf shop was no longer there.
The Portland and Eugene concerts were really fantastic! Jack has a heart of gold. Thanks to Chris, Josh, Billy, Kimmie, Tina, Greg, and Steve Shipsey for stepping forward and volunteering to work at the shows. (Especially Chris for working both shows!!) We sold a lot of shirts, got lots of new members and folks on the mailing list.
We supported Bob with judges. We also really got our name out there with our booth, sold T-shirts. It was a lot of fun, and we look forward to helping out again next summer.
The idea is to have a Surfrider fundraiser with movie and music. Some places we have discussed are St. Johns Pub, Edgefield.
Markus, Chris and Jenn have volunteered to be on the committee. Billy is the chair. Billy will let us know about his success in contacting Karen in Eugene who worked for Surfrider and has a connection at the Edgefield.
We will need a new volunteer coordinator. Start thinking about who you would like to see in the different positions. Executive council positions include: Chair, co-chair, secretary, treasurer, volunteer coordinator, and coastal coordinator. This last position has recently been developed by our past volunteer coordinator. What are YOU interested in doing for the Oregon chapter?
Kevin is planning to host executive council members from the different PNW chapters to help provide skills in public speaking, member stoking, and fun. (Hey, great incentive to get involved in our executive council!)
We want different signs for the beaches. The signs would address litter, trail cutting, etc. If anyone has any experience with graphic arts we could also use help making posters for events and meetings.
Next Coastal Meeting: Saturday, 22 September 2001, 1-3pm. Lincoln City.
Next Portland Meeting: Monday, 8 October 2001, 7:30pm. Salvadore Molly’s in Hilsdale.
Meeting adjourned: 9:00pm.
